The Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair is just a day-a-way and western fans are cleaning off their boots and dusting off their Stetsons in anticipation.
But before the big long weekend gets underway, its time for a few family traditions, including the ever popular western themed Bike Parade, the World Free Style Round-Up Skateboard Championships and the main event: the Bed Races.
Festivities get underway at 6pm at the cross streets of 176th and 58th Avenue in Cloverdale. The program begins with the flatland skateboard demonstration that features pro and semi-pro riders from around the globe.
Following quickly on the kick flips, is our favourite event, the Bike Parade. Kids of all ages are encouraged to sup-up their two-wheeled rides with western themed accouterment. Draw prizes are awarded randomly to the participating riders. Top prize is a $100 gift certificate provided by the Cloverdale Lions, Kearney’s and Shop Cloverdale Magazine.
The final event of the evening is the bed races. Never witnessed this spectacle? You’re in for a treat!
This is truly a homespun tradition. The participants include six ‘pushers’ per relay team and one ‘bed rider’. Teams are encouraged to dress in a matching theme to add an extra element of hilarity.
Most beds are sans mattress with just a frame and four wheels. Just like our guided bicycle tours, helmets are required for all riders.
In probably the most bizarre element of the races, winners of the men’s heats receive the coveted Bed Pan trophy, while the women are awarded the Chamber Pot.
Good luck to all those competing this evening!
